The Transcription to the right discusses a subscription payment for the Athens County Courthouse.  Below is an excerpt from the History of Athens County 1869 which further explains what this subscription payment referred to.

History of Athens County by Charles Walker, 1869,  states that the following persons gave a subscription totaling 500.00 which they paid to Henry Bartlett (of the county treasury) for the building of the Athens county courthouse  with agreement that they would not receive interest on the subscription but would gain access to the courthouse for use of their religious meetings for eight years from 1816 until 1826 and at that time their subscription would be refunded to them.

These subscribers were: Josiah Coe, Cephas Carpenter, Mary Ann Ackley, Lydia Ackley, James Gillmore, Jacob Dumbaugh, John Johnstone, Enos Thompson, David Pratt, Daniel Stewart, Joseph B. Miles, Henry Bartlett, Robert Linzee, Charles Shipman, Ebenezer Currier, Eliphaz Perkins, Chauncey F. Perkins, Alvan Bingham, Amos Crippen, John Porter, James J. Fuller, James Session, Silas Bingham, John White, Abel Stedman, Eliphaz Perkins Jr.,  S. S. Johnstone, John Havner, Thomas Armstrong, Seth Child, Asahel Cooley, Thomas McClelland and Arthur Coates. (History of Athens County, 1869 page 241)

Of these subscribers, Alvan Bingham, Arthur Coates, and Dr. Eliphaz Perkins were of the original nine members of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens established in 1809. (History of Athens County, 1869 page 222)
