compiled By Sandra Mitchell QuinnGeneration No. 1

1. HEZEKIAH J.2 HASHMAN (ZACHARIAH HALSMAN/1) was born 1817 in Loudon County, Va Co. K. Ohio 92nd Infantry OVI, and died January 19, 1887 in Hocking County, OH. He married  SARAH E. STRICKLAND HICKS October 14, 1869 in Wood County, West Virginia, daughter of JOHN STRICKLAND. She was born Ohio, and died 1909 in Hocking County, Ohio.

In 1869 they married in Parkerburg WV, Wood county.  In order to recieve the civil war pension you had to produce your marriage certificate, I believe they remarried in order to have the necessary paperwork.

Daughter Harriett married in Wood county, WV.

In 1870 they were in Hocking county, Ohio.

It says: Hocking county, Ohio census

. I asked Elsie to check her Monroe Co. Marriages for a earlier Hashman marriage, she says that there are no records earlier than 1867 due to destruction by fire. So there dates we have for Hashman and Scott seem to be all there is. The fire may be the reason for Hezekiah and Sarah remarrying in Parkersburg WV so that they have legal proof of their marriage for the Civil War pension.

Sarah E. Hashman a widow is listed in the 1900 census in Hocking county, Ohio living with married daughter Mary Elizabeth Hashman Eckels and her family.

Notes for SARAH E. STRICKLAND:

Tombstone Inscription: 67 years 9 months and 15 days

in the 1900 census Sarah Hashman was living with daughter Mary E Eckles. She says in the census that she was 69, widowed, that she had seven children and only five were living in 1900, that she was born in Ohio and that her parents were born in Pennsylvania.

I believe that Sarah and Hezekiah had a common law marriage but in order to get civil war benefits they had to provide documentation of their marriage which is why they married after several of their children were born.

Child of HEZEKIAH HASHMAN and SARAH STRICKLAND is:

Anna Eckels Mitchell Certificate of Death- Barberton Health Department #7702

She was a housewife. She lived in Ohio, Summit County, Barberton, at 1495 Harden Drive. Her father was John William Eckels, and her mother was Mary Hashman. The informant was Mrs. Betty Darby of 1495 Harden Drive, Barberton, Ohio 44203. Death was caused by arteriosclerotic Heart disease due to congestive failure. Other significant conditions was gangrene of the left foot. Signed by Dr. Robert Roberts M.D. Who attended her from 1970 to 11-3-1974. Death occurred at 11:20 P.M. signed 11-4-1974, at 794 Kenmore Blvd., Akron, Ohio 44314. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery Nelsonville, Ohio. Signed by Funeral Director Dwane Hostetler at Hahn Funeral Home Inc. 98-17th St. N.W. Barberton, Ohio 44203.

Great grandma Annie really believed herself to be born in 1888 in January. However we found her birth record recorded in the Hocking County court house saying she was born in July 12, of 1885. We know this birth recorded by her father in Hocking county after her birth in WV and their traveling to Hocking county to reside because her mother always says on the census that she had four children and all births were surviving. The four children are accounted for, Sarah Elizabeth, James Arthur, Harriett Anne, and Maude May Eckels. This shows that the birth record registered in Hocking county by her father is definitely her birth record. Grandma also went by the name of Mary Anna Eckles when her name was in actuallity Harriett Anna Eckles after her aunt and her mother's sister Harriett Hashman.
