I am looking for information about my 2/G amd 3/G grandparents.
My 2/G Grandfather's name was Abel CARPENTER who lived near Logan
on a farm now occupied by decendants of the original family.
Their name is SHAW. GEORGE SHAW of Logan is the grandson of Abel
CARPENTER also. s/o Emma. I'm trying to find out the name's of
Abel's grandparent's, and his grandparent's children's names.
Abel's parent's were Sampson CARPENTER/ZIMMERMAN/SIMMERMON?? and
Catherine WALTERS. The reason for the three names is that the
name ZIMMERMAN (the original) was changed twice. Once to
Carpenter, and then by another branch to SIMMERMON! (the way it
sounded in to the Enumerator's in English!) This has caused much
confusion and difficulty in searching. Abel's father Sampson,
migrated from Berks Co. PA. and was married on 5/30/1822. and
according to the 1840 census, had 7 son's. Only three are known,
Abel, Jeremiah and Emanuel. The census has Sampson's surname
listed as CARPENTER. So, aparently, his father, was a
Zimmermon!?? If anyone can help me find this information, I would
be forever grateful. Thank you very much, Malcolm Carpenter
