           Lower Scioto Valley Relationships Chart

Using the chart below, one can calculate the blood relationship of any relative, based upon the relationship of the individual to a common ancestor, through the ninth generation.

For example, what is a second cousin, twice removed? A great grandchild of the ancestor is the second cousin, two generations removed, from the great-great-great grandchild of the same ancestor. That is, the equivalent great-grandchildren are second cousins, and the grandchild of the one great-grandchild is the other great-grandchild's second cousin, twice removed.

Find the equal generation between descendants (the common level; eg, second cousin between great-grandchildren of the common ancestor). If you ADD a generation between one person and the common level, that one person is that level (eg, second cousin) plus one generation removed from the common connection point, thus second cousin, once removed. Each successive generation added between the common level and the individual referenced is the number of removeds within the relationship.

But my father/mother later married his/her spouse's sibling. Now what?

Not to worry. The relationships aren't nearly as complicated as they may first appear.

Starting at the beginning, Mom and Dad marry; Aunt and Uncle marry. Both sire children. Keep in mind the relationship of Mom and Aunt, as this is the common connection point. (NB: The genders of the individuals may be changed as needed; the relationships remain intact.)

    Maternal Parents
 __________|__________

 | |
Mom Dad Aunt Uncle
 |----+----| |----+----|
      | |
  Child D Child A = First Cousins
      | |
  GChild D1 GChild A1 = Second Cousins
      | |
 GGChild D2 GGChild A2 = Third Cousins

Then Mom dies or is divorced from Dad; likewise, Uncle (by marriage) dies or is divorced from Aunt. Dad marries Aunt:

      | |
GGChild D2 GGChild A2 = Third Cousins and Second Step-cousins

Then Dad and Aunt/Spouse sire Child DA

                                             = Third Cousins (Mom/Aunt)

But wait! Dad divorced Mom; Aunt divorced Uncle. Mom and Uncle got married! Dad and Aunt got married! Both new sets had kids! Now what?

Panic not. Mom's interrelationship adds one level of complication:

OH! It's much more than that, though. Dad and Uncle were BROTHERS! NOW where am I?

Same place, same players, but increase the complication factor just a bit.

Factor in the differences in generations to determine the "removeds" using the chart at the top of the page, eg. Child D1 is the first step-cousin and second cousin, once removed, from GGChild A2.
