DAVID AND
SARAH
MIGRATE TO OHIO
David
Dufur, his wife
Sarah and children emigrate westward to settle in the newly opened
territory of
Ohio, near Marietta, Ohio. When they were coming down the Ohio River
they
encountered a storm; their boat capsized. David and a little girl
[whose name
is not known but believed to be a daughter of David and Sarah],
drowned. Her
body was never found. David's body washed ashore and was found about
three
months later by his sons, when they were hunting game. The remainder of
the
party on the boat took refuge on Blennerhassets Island. The next day
they
either repaired the boat or made a raft and were able to reach the
shore near
Little Hocking, Ohio. The widow, Sarah, bought land near Belpre, Belpre
Township, Washington Co., Ohio. A son,
Edmund Denney Dufur, was born to her a few months after her husband
drowned.
The children grew up ,married, some moved further west, and some
returned to
live in Washington Co., Ohio.
Descendants were living in Belpre as of 1978. Sarah never
recovered from
the loss of her husband and daughter, and the hardships of life in the
wilderness. It is believed that she returned to New York to be near her
own
people.

Notes for
David Dufur:
From
"Washington County, Ohio to
1980"
THE DUFUR FAMILY
My
great-great grandfather, David Dufur,
was born in Vermont in 1778. He married
Sarah Toby. About 1816 they came down
the Ohio River. Near Belpre he and a
daughter were drowned. Her body was
never recovered' his was found three months later.
It seems
my great grandfather, the
oldest son, Abel, bought a considerable tract of land in Decatur
Township, then
went on to Illinois. There he married
Polly Fairchild. My grandfather, Edmund
Philander Dufur, was born there in 1930.
Polly died and they came back to Ohio where Abel married a
widow, Eunice
Bacheldor Root.
Edmund
married Margaret Perry. They lived on a
farm and had eight
children. My father, George Dufur, was
born in 1862. In 1800-1803 he and his
three
brothers went West. He homesteaded in
Nebraska and built a sod house. In 1893
he returned to Ohio to marry Alice Johnson.
They returned to the sod house where my brother, sister, and I
were
born.
After
Grandmother's death, my parents
came back to Ohio to live with Grandfather.
My
great-grandfather was active in the
Underground Railroad to free runaway slaves.
A trail went through Decatur to Cutler.
On our
farm there was a rock formation,
two large boulders with a cleft between an entrance beneath. It was called the Bear's Den.
Supposedly the last bear in the territory
was killed there.
There had
been a grist mill on Little
Hocking Creek (now called river) bordering our farm.
It was all gone before my time.
I was told it burned coal from the hillside opposite. The coal was mined by a free slave named
Peyton. He had worked 49 years in
Virginia mines for his master. He lived
to be 128 years old. I remember him
well.
*****Note of Sue Waterman....The tombstone
for the freed slave, "Uncle Billy Peyton" , is located at the Antioch
Methodist Church Cemetery on State Route 555.
He was born in slavery September 2, 1792 in Virginia and was
owned by George Creel and never sold.
He remained with the Creel family from one generation to the
next until
his freedom in 1868.
Continuing
with the article..........
The beams
in our big barn came from the
mill. They were put together with
wooden pins.
There was
also a mill at the mouth of
Little Hocking River. It too is long
gone.
In the
middle 1800's there were several
churchs in Decatur including a Quaker hcurch at Fillmore, our Post
Office was
Rural Free Deliver.
December
20, 1917, I married George Milton
Parker from Hockingport. He was
stationed at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe for World War I.
He was 22 and I was 21.
After my
father died in 1933 my husband
and I moved to the farm where we raised our four sons and a daughter. When my husband died died in 1968 I sold the
farm to my grandson, Jan Parker.
In 1976
lightning struck the house and
burned it. He then sold the farm. After four generations it is gone from the
family. Like so many first settlers
names, the Dufur name is gone from the vicinity. There
are many Dufurs in the West, descendants of the ones who
came down the Ohio.

Notes for
Sidney
Place:
Taken from
the
Jefferson County, Illinois History, printed 1883
Sidney
Place is one of the old and
respected residents of Jefferson County.
He was born in Chittendon County, Vermont, April 21, 1807. The youngest child of John and Lydia (Garland)
Place, both of New Hampshire. The father
was a carpenter by trade, but in late years he engaged in farming. He volunteered and served six months in the
Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Bennington.
He died April 2, 1828. The parents
were blessed with ten children,
only two of whom are living in 1883, Hanna and Sidney.
His father had been married twice. His
first wife bearing him three children.
Our
subject got but a meager education
in early life. At about ten years of
age his parents removed to New York, and then to Ohio, where the father
died,
and afterwards to this county in 1839, where the mother died in August
of
1845. Sidney and his brother, Isaac
settled in Knob Prairie from 1840 to 1842.
Mr Place worked at boat building in Ohio for several years and
afterwards coming to this county, engaged in farming.
He had a farm of 200 acres.
Sidney
Place married Rhoda Dufur of
Ohio, daughter of David Dufur. This
union was blessed with ten children, five of whom are living in 1883. Emily, Luther, Isaac, Rufus and Malissa. They had five sons in the Civil War, one of
whom died in Andersonville Prison, a prisoner of war.
Politically,
Mr. Place is a
Republican. He has nine
great-grandchildren living.
__________________________________________________________________
A short
sage about the
Place family - prepared by Audrey Merriman
The Place
family came from Devonshire,
England to New England in 1634. Later
they migrated to Stafford County, New Hampshire, then on to Chittenden
County,
Vermont, where Sidney Place was born April 21, 1807, the youngest child
of John
and Lydia (Jackson) Garland Place.
The family
migrated to Washington
County, Ohio when Sidney was just a boy.
His father served in the Revolutionary War, and with the end of
the war
these veterans received land grants as their payment for time of duty. These many veterans began to demand that the
Northwest Territory be opened up for settlement, so with the passing of
the
Northwest Ordinance, Ohio was opened for settlement, thus began the
vast
migration into Ohio.
There was
a great contrast between the
long cold winters of Vermont, New Hampshire and New York and the mild
winters
of the Ohio country. Settlers arriving
at the Falls of the Hocking River on April 7, 1788, reported that they
found
the trees in full leaf, and the grass high enough to pasture all their
livestock. It was a land of huge trees,
fertile soils, and plenty of wild game.
One oak tree is recorded as being 41 feet in circumference. It had 463 growth rings when cut down. The soil was so rich that farmers were said
to boast that their corn grew eight inches in 24 hours.
Wild turkeys weighing from 16 to 30 pounds
roamed the woods. They were caught and
put in pens by the hundreds and clubbed to death. One
hunter told of killing 20 deer in one day and the carcasses
were used to the feed the people in the settlement of Marietta. Tales such as these stirred an interest in
the heart of every man, and that explains why the Place family, the
Dufurs,
Gilberts, Fairchilds and others migrated to Ohio. The
New England winters were very severe and the summers were
short, so as to make it very difficult for farmers in that area, so I
am sure
the milder winters of Ohio was by each and all, appreciated.
John
Place, who was a boat builder, and
a friend of his, Eli Gilbert, Sr., and their families heard these
stories and
decided to move to this wonderful place called Ohio.
After much talking and planning, on September 25, 1816, they
loaded their possessions into wagons and started the long journey
across New
York and Pennsylvania, and down the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers to the
far off
settlements around Marietta, Ohio. They
didn't have the famous conestoga wagons that were used for the western
treks,
but only farm wagons, pulled by horses.
All went
well until they reached Seneca
Falls, New York, where one of their horses died and left them stranded. They stopped here and set up camp and Mr.
Place and Mr. Gilbert went to work making charcoal, which was then in
demand
for the iron furnaces there. They got
enough money together to buy another horse, and traveled on a few miles
to
Geneva, New York, where they camped and stayed nearly a year, and Mr.
Place
worked there as a boat builder. While
there they built flat boats for themselves to carry them down the
Allegheny
River, and on March 1, 1818, they set out again for the Ohio country. They got over onto the Ohio River and went
into Marietta, Ohio and spent a week looking around.
But were not satisfied with it, so they went on down river to
Little Hocking. They stayed here for
about a year, then moved on to Decature Township in Washington County,
Ohio. Here they stayed and began to
farm the land.
While here
in Ohio, Sidney Place grew to
manhood, helping his father farm the land on which the family resided. He met a beautiful young lady by the name of
Rhoda Dufur, daughter of David and Sarah Dufur. She
was born Mach 24, 1807 in New York and migrated to Ohio with
her parents about the same time as the Place family.
Her family, too, came down river on a flat boat, but had the
misfortune of losing their boat and possessions in an accident which
also took
the life of her father. This friendship
grew into a love affair and Sidney and Rhoda were married November 3rd,
1927,
in Decature Township by the Justice of the Peace, Eli Gilbert, Sr. They resided on a farm and began to raise
their family.
By the
spring of 1838 that part of Ohio
had become thickly populated and economic opportunities were not as
plentiful
as before, so early settlers began to thirst for new frontiers to
settle. The Places and Gilberts were again
thinking
of moving West. Illinois was being
opened up for settlement as it had become a state in 1838.
Eli Gilbert and Sidney Place went to
Illinois to look the country over and see what they thought of it. Family legend says that these two men walked
the length of Illinois from Shawneetown to Chicago, Illinois, looking
the land
over, trying to decide where the ideal place for them to settle would
be. They finally chose Jefferson County,
thinking it best suited for their needs and would make very good farm
ground. Then they returned to Ohio and
began to make plans. That fall Sidney
and his brother, Isaac Place, Eli Gilbert, Sr., and Asa Newell,
returned back
to Jefferson County, Illinois to select land they wanted to buy. They got into Mt. Vernon and started out on
a road until they came to a house where a Mr. Rightnowar lived, they
stopped
there to do some inquiring. He invited
them to spend the night with him and his family. They
accepted the invitation and made this place their
headquarters while exploring the land to the south and to the west.
The first
night there they had quite a
scare and were frightened, as there was quite a bit of robbery and a
murder in
the Illinois country at that time. They
were rolled up in their blankets in front of the fireplace, and Mr. and
Mrs.
Rightnowar had retired to the only bedroom in the house, when some
young
backwoodsmen came noisily into the house.
Mr. Rightnowar said, "You boys be quiet and go on up to bed,
we've
got visitors tonight." The boys
slept in the loft, which was reached by climbing a ladder outside the
house. One of the was heard saying in a
rough voice, "Recon they've got any money?" The
men were somewhat uneasy for the rest of the night, for they
did have money which they brought with the to buy land and pay for
their
lodging. All land had to be bought in
those days, as the homestead law wasn't passed until 1863.
The men made it up among themselves to take
turns staying awake. Later they found
it wasn't necessary as the boys meant no harm.
The next
day the men set out in search
for land. They followed the trail on
across the West Muddy River and looked around the area that was known
as Knob
Prairie. Each man found land suitable
for his needs and selected the land of their choice.
This land was bought and paid for at a land office in
Shawneetown,
Illinois. The Rightnowar boys helped
them to erect pole shelters for each of them, so they would have a
place to
live while they built their permanent houses.
These men selected land near each other, so they would all be
neighbors
in this new settlement. After
completing the pole shelters, they returned back to Ohio to make plans
for the
final move to Illinois.
They made
one more crop in Ohio and Mr.
Gilbert began to saw the lumber which they would need for their new
houses, a
mill, a store, and several flat boats before dismantling his saw mill. They worked fast and furious all summer
getting this work completed. When the
flat boats were finished in the fall of 1939 they began to load them. They loaded all household goods, the big
iron kettles, livestock, wagons, tools and lumber, spinning and weaving
tools
and the late mill stone of Mr. Gilbert.
The millstone and one of the iron kettles is still in
Waltonville,
Illinois, in Jefferson County, near the post office on public display
for all
to see, then with many sad goodbyes and tears the party parted from
friends and
relatives and started out for Illinois.
There were
several people in this party,
for several families came together on this long journey to a new home. Even though many loved ones were going with
them to Illinois there were many who could not go, so their hearts were
very
heavy as they started down the river to Shawneetown, Illinois. They were two or more weeks on the
river. Since they were only a few days
from Pittsburg, Pa., when they started, the old saying, "From Pittsburg
to
Shawneetown is a long ways to go,
fifteen days upon the Ohio."
Probably applies to them as well.
The river trip was no doubt a lot of work, as there was more
than two
hundred sunken vessels and other obstructions between Pittsburg and
Shawneetown
at that time, according to historical records.
They also had to go over the falls of the Ohio at Louisburg,
Kentucky
unloading the boats and letting them down with ropes, then reloading
them on
the other side. There was several huge
flat boats in the group so it must have been quite a task and taken a
lot of
time and hard work to navigate the falls.
Upon reaching Shawneetown the Places and some of the others sold
their
flat boats and loaded their possessions upon their wagons for the rest
of the journey. Mt. Gilbert dismantled his
boat though, and
salvaged the lumber for later use.
In was in
October of 1839 when they
arrived in the settlement known as Knob Prairie in Jefferson County,
Illinois. This is a large section of
flat prairie land with a few scattered patches of timber.
Each family then began to do what was
necessary to get living quarters ready for their own use.
They were all very busy and that helped them
get over the feeling of loss they felt on leaving loved ones behind in
Ohio. I have a feeling the women probably
suffered
this the most, as Rhoda gave birth to a son in March of 1840 and she
named him
Stephen Decature Place. Decature for
the old Ohio settlement she had left behind.
To add to her sorrow, one of her children died in March of
lockjaw. These pioneer woman were strong
in courage,
and faith and all did their share in helping carve out a new home in
the
wilderness.
Sidney and
Rhoda Place brought five
children with the from Ohio and had five more born in Illinois. They settled on a large farm and all of the
family
worked very hard the first few years in Illinois getting settled. When they came there were but three or four
other families in Knob Prairie, but it grew very rapidly.
In the
1840's many other Ohio families
followed these first settlers, Rhoda's sister, Sarah Dufur, who married
Stephen
Gale Gilbert in Washington County, Ohio and their family moved in near
Sidney
and Rhoda Place, as did other family members.
Soon it began to resemble the old settlement in Ohio, as these
relatives
and friends gathered together again.
Sidney planted a big walnut grove soon after he settled in his
family. His daughter, Emily (Place)
Hirons often told of how, as a small girl, she helped start this grove
by
dropping the walnuts in the ground for planting, and how much her back
ached
and how tired she was from doing this work.
It was an experience she never forgot.
The children always had to work hard, the same as the parents,
for the
life of the pioneer was never an easy one.
In 1845
Sidney Place and others began building
roads in the community. And the
families realized a need for a church, so they got together and formed
the
Universalist Church, since that was the church they had all attended
and helped
start in Ohio. They secured a minister
and the first church and Sunday School was formed.
There is still (in 1977) a Universalist Church in Waltonville,
Illinois, which was created from this early church which these people
helped
form, and many descendants of Sidney and Rhoda Place still are active
members
of this church. The love and labor of
this small group of faithful pioneers is still a part of the community
today,
and something we can all be proud of.
A railroad
came through in 1854 and this
gave the farmers access to the big city markets and settlers began to
raise
livestock and drive them to the railroad where they were loaded on cars
and
shipped to the city. The livestock
included turkeys, geese, pigs, cattle and sheep. Mr.
Gilbert set up his mill and built a store, then things began
to boom around Knob Prairie. An
agriculture association was formed in 1860 and Sidney Place became an
officer
in it and also held an office in the
Fair Association in 1862.
______________________________________________________________________
Sidney and
Rhoda Place had five sons and
one son-in-law. Their son, Stephen
Decature Place, fought in the Battle of Chicamauga on September 19 and
20, 1863
and was wounded and reported missing.
He was captured and taken prisoner by the Rebel Army and put
into a
prison camp at Richmond, Virginia on September 7, 1863.
He transferred from there to Danville,
Georgia and finally was transferred on March 7, 1864 to Andersonville,
Georgia
prison camp, where he died. The largest
number of prisoners incarcerated at any time was over 33,000 men. More than 900 prisoners died every month
during the thirteen months the prison was in existence.
There were other prisoners from Jefferson
County, Illinois there besides Stephen.
He whittled a key that would unlock the door so they could
escape but he
became very ill and weak and told the others to go without him. They escaped and returned to Jefferson
County to relate their story.

Obituary
of Mrs. Emily
Gilbert
AUGUSTA
EMILY
HIRONS-GILBERT - eldest daughter of Sidney and Rhoda Place was born
Aug. 2,
1828 in the state of Ohio and departed this life July 6, 1916 at the
ripe old
age of 87 years, 11 months and 4 days.
She was united in marriage with Benjamin Level Hirons March 23,
1848.
To this
union three sons were born, John
C., who died Jan. 30, 1883, aged almost 35 years, Sidney T. who died
June 13,
1910, aged 60 years, and Luther B. who
died Dec. 31, 1903, aged 54 years.
All her
children grew to manhood and
became useful men in this community, but all preceeded the mother to
the spirit
land. Immediately after her marriage,
she and her husband began housekeeping in a log cabin on the hill where
she
lived, continuously up to the time of her death. A
year after her marriage her husband became a cripple, unable to
look after his farming and livestock interests as he had done, and
these duties
developed upon the wife and little boys.
In this work she was very successful and by and through the
experience
thus obtained, made her life a notable one for the resolute manner and
business-like way in which she conducted her affairs.
She was an
untiring worker, devoted to
her home, her family, and her children, ever mindful of the poor and
unfortunate ones in the community around her.
She was especially noted for her many charitable deeds, living
as she
did during the Civil War, was a time that tried men's souls and brought
forth
the loyalty and devotion of the wives, mothers, sisters and
sweet-hearts, and
this opportunity was made use of by grandma to aid and assist in every
way
possible those gallant boys who wore the blue and who were giving their
lives,
their all for the salvation of their country.
She was one of the first as well as one the most liberal in
responding
to the needs of the soldiers with clothing and all things necessary to
their
welfare whether in the hospital, sick or wounded, on the march on or in
the
tent. An incident is related of her
riding from Knob Prairie on horse back in the month of December,
probably in
the year of 1863, to the home of Aunt Hannah Ketchum in Ashley, about
fourteen
miles, where she and Aunt Hannah worked all night baking bread and
cookies
which were sent to the soldiers the next morning.
Many times
she rode miles and miles over
this country gathering up linen which was torn into strips, scraped,
sewed and
rolled in form for bandages for the purpose of being used to bind up
the wounds
of the soldier boys, and also yarn which was knit into socks by herself
and
other patriotic and loyal women of the community.
It is said
of her, and said truly, that
never was there a descendant of hers born into this world but what
Grandma was
one of the first to visit the home of the little stranger to make to
the little
one her customary donation of money or some useful article to minister
to the
needs of the child, so you see benedictions of charity did not end with
the
war. Whenever she heard of a family
losing their home by fire she was soon seen wending her way toward the
needy
and ofttimes almost helpless family, with food and clothing and
whatever was
for the comfort and assistance of the unfortunate ones, often leaving
with them
more of these things than they had possessed before.
Many are the incidents that might be related in the life of this
remarkable woman, of her many kind acts and noble deeds and what a
blessed
through it is that comes welling up in our minds to say "She had done
all
she could."
Some years
after the death of Mr.
Hirons, she was married to Cyrus Gilbert with whom she lived until his
death in
1902 and since that time she has made her home with Mrs. Mattie Hirons,
where
she has been attended with all the care and devotion that could be
given to a
mother. Grandma always appreciated her
neighbors and friends visiting her and the diary she wrote during the
many
years of her life made mention of many of these visits as well as other
useful
and valuable information. She was
always a great reader, but not of fiction, but of her Bible and the
daily
papers, and in this way she became well informed and was able to hold
intelligent conversations on the current events of the day, and
probably to
this habit may be attributed her strong mind which she retained even to
the
close of earth life. Keeping up with
the spirit of the times made her an interesting conversationalist and
it was a
delight to any one to hold conversation with her.
She lived
the life of the present filled
with a bountiful supply of knowledge of the past, and she was a woman
of
unusually good judgment, resolute in purpose and in her convictions.
She leaves
to mourn her departure two
brothers, Isaac Place of Palmer, Neb., and Luther Place of St. Frances,
Mos.,
sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Aunt Em,
as she was so familiarly called,
began her wedded life on this hill, Knob Prairie as it has always been
called,
where her funeral was held on Saturday, July 8, 1916 at three o'clock. She was a charter member of the First
Universalist Church ever organized in this community and has always
been one of
our most devoted and loyal members, never missing a service when able
to
attend. The funeral was conducted by
her pastor, Rev. J. B. Foster on the lawn where she made her home and
was
largely attended by relatives and friends.
The floral offerings were many.
Interment took place at Knob Prairie Cemetery.
The loved
ones have the sympathy of the
entire community.

Obituary
of George
Newell, October 25, 1922
GEORGE
NEWELL - son of
Asa and Elinor Newell, was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, on april
15,
1841 died at home two miles north of Waltonville, October 25, 1922,
aged 81
years, 6 months and 10 days.
He was
born one of a family of seven
children: Levi, Lucy, Oscar, Ichabod,
Phillip and Douglas. All but Phillip
having preceeded him in death, Douglas having died in May, 1922 and
Oscar died
on October 18, 1922, just one week ago.
On December 21, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah
Gilbert,
daughter of Stephen and Sarah Gilbert.
To this union nine children were
born, Asa, Laura (widow of C.S. Lemon): Mina, (wife of D. S.
Fairchild):
Norman, Minnie (wife of A. G. Taylor); John, Earl, Margaret and Lorin,
the
latter two having preceded him in death many years ago.
On June 26, 1888, death claimed his wife and
left him the care of his small children until March 30, 1893, he was
united in
marriage with Miss Henrietta Fred, daughter of Willia and Sarah Fred. To this union, three children were born, one
having died in infancy, Oscar and Miss Myrtle at home.
He leaves besides his wife, one brother and
nine children, twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-granchildren
and a
host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
In early
life he was united with the
Universalist Church at Old Williamsburg and had always lived a devoted
Christian, always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. "Uncle" George as he was
familiarly known, wished he might get well, but realizing his time was
short
expressed his willingness to go.
At the age
of 20, on July 1, 1861, he
volunteered in Co. F., 44th Illinois Infantry and served his country
well and
faithfully for three years, when on Septeber 15, 1864, he was honorably
discharged from service at Atlanta, Ga.
He lay sick for several months in the hospital and fought
afterwards at
Chattanooga, Chicamuga and Atlanta and other severe engagements. Just 57 years to the date of his discharge,
his two youngest sons, Earl and Oscar, left for the training camp
during the
World War. He was ever a devoted
husband and father.
All his
long and useful life was spent
in Jefferson County, one half mile from his old home where he was born. His earthly home was an idea one where peace
and happiness reigned.
Funeral
was held at the home of 1 o'clock,
Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27,
1922, by Rev. G. A. Phelp of Chester, Illinois and the body was laid to
rest in
the Gilbert cemetery under many beautiful flowers.
Maude Newell Place and Claude Newell were twins who remained
very
close all their lives. Maude Newell married Frank Place, and they named
their
oldest son, Claude. Oddly, enough,
Maude's brother and her son she named after her brother died on the
same day.

Notes for James Edward
Reed:
Nickname "Guy".
He attended McKindrell College at Lebanon, Illinois and became
State
Auditor, and during the depression, he was supposed to audit some books
in
Chicago - at the time Al Capone was running Chicago.
Two firms on Guy's list were in Capone's territy and they had
not
paid any income taxes for years. When
Guy went to audit the books, they offered him a large sum of money to
overlook
the books, but Guy knew if the Government found out, it would be the
end of his
job. he refused the bribe, and turned
in the amount of the audit. Two of
Capone's men were sent to prison. After
that, Guy's life was in danger. The
Capone Gang hounded hi from one place to another and finally caught up
with him
at Woodlawn, Illinois. He was alone in
his mother's house, the died the previous year. The
gange closed in on him, the spring of 1934 and killed him
right in the house, then took his body out to the C.B. and Q. Railroad
track
two miles west of Woodlawn, Illinois and propped it up in the center of
the
track, the train came along and the engineer couldn't stop in time, so
the body
was cut all to pieces. The house was
found in a mess, tables and chairs turned over, and blood everywhere,
but the
verdict was "killed by a train".
Every one in Illinois was scared of the Capone Gang then and for
many
years later.

GONE
ON BEFORE
Another

the unseen world beyond,
one more whom we loved is now a dweller on that other shore, where
there are no
storms or clouds, but joy and peace for ever more.
Died
Friday night, April 9, 1897, at
home on Mirage Flats, at 11 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Laura C. Dufur, wife of
E. L.
Dufur. Deceased was born April 2, 1858,
in Athens County, Ohio, where she resided up to the time of her
marriage. She was married to E. L. Dufur
November 14,
1882. They then came west, got them a
home and settled in Cass County, this state, where they resided up to
the time
of her death. She came with her husband
to this county in an early day and anyone acquainted with the trials
and
discouragements in a new country, know something about what she had to
go
through with, yet she did not murmur nor complain.
She was satisfied to share the
prosperity or adversity, with the one she had chosen to walk
side by
side with until death separated them, which part she has faithfully
fulfilled. Deceased has been ailing for
some time, and had just partially recovered from a severe attack of
illness
caused by an abcess forming in her side when she was attacked with
lagrippe,
which in the end proved fatal. She
leaves a husband and three children and many friends to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at the home of
the deceased at 11 o'clock a.m. Sunday, April 11, conducted by Rev. T.
Mohler,
after which the remains were followed to their last resting place in
Mirage
Cemetery by a large concourse of friends and neighbors.
We hereby extend our heartfelt sympathy to
the bereaved husband and children.

20, 1897, at 11:50 p.m., Ilma C. Dufur, aged 13 years,
6 months and 28 days.
Again we are called upon to chronicle a comparatively sudden
death. Within a week of the end, Ilma
was in reasonable good health, although suffering some fro LaGrippe, no
serious
result was anticipated. But the care
and anxiety incident upon the sickness and death of her mother occurred
on the
9th inst. so reduced her strength and vitality that when taken to her
bed by
relapse of grippe, blood poisoning set in and the end soon came, and
the
bereaved father and two little boys, Alfred and Ralph are again
compelled to
mourn the loss of a dear daughter and beloved sister.
Oh! How sad it was to
give her up when she just blooming into womanhood, and would have been
so much
help and comfort to her father and little brothers, but then we must
submit our
wills to the One who gave and hath the right to take away.
The funeral services were held in the home of the deceased at
10 o'clock a.m. Thursday, April 22, conducted by the Rev. Thos. Mohler. A large company of friends paid their
respects to the departed one by following the reains to their last
resting
place in Mirage Cemetery.
Ilma you have gone and left us,
to
that bright and
peaceful shore
And we know if we are faithful,
we
will meet to
part no more
A
Friend

Her husband, the late Sidney T. Hirons, at
one time served as county treasurer of Jefferson County.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July

until the funeral hour. Mrs. Hirons was born August 30, 1854 in
Waltonville,
the daughter of John Dodds and Emmaline Keller Dodds.
She is the last member of that pioneer Jefferson County
family. On November 18, 1875, she was
united in marriage with Sidney T. Hirons at Waltonville.
He died on June 13, 1910. She is
survived by two sons, Hugh Hirons of
Waltonville and John D. Hirons of Fresno, California; two daughters,
Mrs. Ruth
Davis of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Ray Mannen of Waltonville; six
grandchildren and
three great grandchildren. Three

______________________________________________________________
The Mt.
Vernon
(Illinois) Register, Tuesday, August 12, 1941
After a
lingering illness, Mrs. Susan C.
Hirons passed away Thursday morning, July 17, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs.
Ray Mannen in Waltonville, at the age of 86 years, 10 months, 17 days. She was the daughter of John D. and Emiline
Keller Dodds, one of those pioneer families of Jefferson County. She was one of a family of five, her three
brothers- David D., W. Neal, and Wm. S., with a sister, Mrs. Margaret
A.
Mannen, preceding her. She was married
to Sidney T. Hirons, son of Benjamin and Emily Place Hirons on November
18,
1875. To them were born four children,
Mrs. Ruth Davis of Mt. Vernon, John D. of Fresno, California, Wm. Hughs
and
Mrs. Ray Mannen of Waltonville, all of whom all survive, together with
six
grandchildren, Lucille Bean, Margaret Cullen, Sidney Hirons, Marjorie
Martin,
Merritie Mannen, Leland Mannen, and three great grandchildren, Patty
and Sue
Cullen and Bobby Bean. The deceased
lived all her life in and near Waltonville.
While Mrs. Hirons was not affiliated with the Primitive Baptist
Church,
she was a strong believer in the faith and lived its principles. She was truly a Christian woman.
In her family she was gentle, kind and
loving. In her home life she was
unassuming,
true and devoted. No one ever came into
her home that did not feel the warmth and genuine hospitality of a
friendly and
sympathetic heart. In the long
affliction of her husband, she never murmured or grew weary. In her own long illness, she was always
cheerful and hoping that she would soon grow better.
She was all that a devoted wife and a loving mother could be. She leaves for the living, unwritten
precepts of a life which will make us grow stronger in that faith which
will
light the darkest pathway along life's journey. She
lived such a faith that if we could feel her comforting and
sympathetic life just now, it would be as that great poet who said,
'Twilight
and evening bell, And after that the dark; And may there be no sadness
of
farewell, When I embark.' Crossing of
the Bar for such a Christian life as she lived is one of rest and peace
in the
life that is immortal. Funeral services
were held Saturday at the M.E. Church conducted by Elder D. E. Baker of
Charleston, Illinois. Six nephews acted
as pall bearers. Interment was in Knob
Prairie Cemetery.

he was united
in marriage to Emily Fairchild, whose death occurred in the year 1899. To this union were born two sons, George
Warren Newell and Asa Eli Newell and five daughters, Mrs. Ola Davis,
Mrs. Rhoda
Brady, Mrs. Sarah Harrett, Mrs. Cecil Black and Mrs. Grace Hester, all
of whom
survived except two of the daughters, Sarah and Grace.
May 17, 1909, he was married to Mrs. Lucy
Hamilton, who with one brother, Phillip Newell; two half-brothers,
George and
Oscar Newell (the latter living in Kansas) and eleven grandchildren
remain to
mourn his death. During the greater
part of his life he resided on the old Newell homestead in Blissfield
township. Title to this farm was
acquired by his father, one of the pioneers of Jefferson County in the
year of
1843. "Uncle Doug" as he was
familiarly called by his many friends, was a man of plain and
unassuming
habits; he held not to a religion of theory, but one of practice. Honesty was the keynote of his everyday
life. During the last sickness, he was
inclined to look on the bright and sunny side and when those of his
friends and
neighbors called daily to inquire, as to his welfare, his answer was
always,
"I am better". Truly, it can
be said the world is better for his having lived in it.
Burial services were conducted at the Cyrus
Gilbert cemetery northwest of town on May 10th.

Newell:
Obituary - STEPHEN ASA NEWELL - December 31, 1935,
The Mt. Vernon Register
The hand
of sorrow has again been laid
upon us and that unwelcome guest death came upon us suddenly when it
summoned
Stephen Asa Newell who has passed
serenely into the Kingdom above while helping a neighbor thrash. He was unable to walk away and sat down when
he suddenly collapsed, from whence he never regained consciousness. Asa Newell was the eldest son of George and
Sarah Gilbert Newell, early settlers of Blissville Twp.
He was
born January 15, 1865 on the
farm where he grew to manhood. His boyhood and early life was passed in his
native county where he learned many duties incident to far life and it
may
truly be said of him that whatsoever success he achieved in life, was
due to
his good judgment. He was married to
Huldah South August 31, 1887 and in
this union were born these children:
Mrs. Orvall Mannen, Mrs. Frankie VanNelson and Harry Newell, all
of
Waltonville.
Besides
his life companion and the above
named children, the following named sisters and brothers:
Mrs. Chas. Lemons, Mrs. Roy Freeman of
Scheller, Illinois; Mrs. Mina Fairchild of Woodlawn; Mrs. Gifford
Taylor, John
Everett Newell; Earl Newell of Waltonville; Norman Newell of Mt.
Vernon; Oscar
Newell of Waltonville, Illinois and four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild
are left to mourn his sudden demise.
The place
where a person of strong
individuality has made is not easily filled.
We love our friends for what they mean to us in our relationship
to
them. Mr. Newell was a man of many
virtues, absolutely unselfish, freely making any sacrifice that might
benefit
his loved ones. His kindly nature, his
consideration for the welfare of those around him endeared him, in all
who knew
him. It can truly be said of Asa
Newell, that he was a man among men, he thought not of self, but lived
his life
for others, his impress for good will be remembered for his life of
unselfish
devotion to others. His death comes as
a great shock, not only to his own immediate family, but to the many
friends of
middle life who knew and loved him when he was their father, neighbor
and
friend. His life will prove an
inspiration to his children and his friends will ever cherish this
memory.
Only
pleasant memories will stir their
hearts while tears dim their eyes and they dwell in loving remembrance
of years
suddenly ended in death. We bow in a
great sorrow and bring the choicest tribute of affection that our words
can
express. With great faith in God, we
simply said Farewell until we come into the morning of mornings of that
great
Sabbath Day of rest. Mr. Newell was a
member of the IOOF Lodge of Waltonville for twenty-five years. His age was 70 years and 10 days.
The
funeral services were conducted by
Rev. G. A. Phelps of Makanda, Illinois at the Methodist Church in
Waltonville,
Illinois, Thursday, January 2, 1935 at 2 p.m.
Interment was at Knob Prairie Cemetery.

Notes from
the memoirs of Helen Dufur
Casper
In 1909,
my father, two brothers and a
brother-in-law, all with their families migrated west and filed on
homesteads
in the sandhills of western Nebraska.
Our homestead was located near the Middle Loup River, one and
one-half
miles north of Mullen, in Hooker County, which was formerly used by
cattle
ranchers. The year we arrived in
Mullen, the little town of only a few hundred population was all in
confusion
and excitement as a federal man had been murdered by a local man in the
saloon,
and was buried in a shallow grave near the stockyards, only a couple of
blocks
away. This man became drunk a few days
later and revealed the whereabouts of the murdered man's grave.
The police
and federal authorities began
to investigate and found the body of the murdered man and a big trial
followed. Several of we kids skipped
school to listen in on the trial now and then.
We became so excited and spooky about the horrid affair we were
almost
afraid to walk down the street on the sidewalk, if you could call it a
sidewalk. It had built of boards and
part of them were broken and creaky which added to all of the
mysterious
atmosphere. This went on for several
weeks. We found out all the facts, as
well as the crooked and deceitful maneuvering taking place by a
criminal lawyer
to free a guilty murderer, as my brother-in-law was county sheriff at
the
time. This was an experience we
youngsters never forgot.
