Generation No. 1
1. Eli1 Gilbert was born
January 24, 1788 in New
Hampshire, and died October 07, 1875 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He married Susannah Gale March 08,
1808 in Chittenden County, Vermont. She
was born August 23, 1791 in New Hampshire.
Notes for
Eli Gilbert:
In the
fall of 1838,
Sidney and Isaac Place, sons of John, and Asa Blake Newell and members
of the
Gilbert family went to Blissville Twp.,
Jefferson County, Illinois to select the land they wanted. They all built pole cabins and then returned
back to Ohio by flatboat. They then
went overland to Jefferson County, Illinois, arriving there in October
of
1839. (This is
from Gilbert Family
History on file in the Washington County, Ohio Genealogical Library)

Mt. Vernon
(Illinois)
Register, August 21, 1895
Philo
Gilbert and wife have been married
half a century. Philo was born June 14,
1821 in Decatur, Washington Co., Ohio and in 1839 with his parents
moved to
this county. They settled in Knob
Prairie, bring with them from Ohio the lumber which was used to build
their
first home. He was the eighth child of
a family of seventeen. His parents came
from New Hampshire to Ohio and then to Illinois. On
August 15, 1845, he married Mrs. Harriet Taylor, a sister of
Washington Quinn, of Elk Prairie. For several weeks the family had been planning
a celebration and until a few hours before noon, the couple had no
knowledge of
the plans. There were 50-60 people at
the celebration, friends and family members.
______________________________________________________________
Mt. Vernon
Register,
June 17, 1899
After a
lingering illness, Uncle Philo
Gilbert passed peacefully away at his home, corner of Broadway and
First
Streets, at 5 o'clock this morning, his vitality having exhausted by
the long
drain upon his condition by a malignant attack of locomotor ataxia,
complicated
by other troubles. Few men have lived
longer in the county, or were better known than Mr. Gilbert, and his
death
removes a conspicuous pioneer and highly estimable citizen. He was born of sturdy New England stock in
Washington County, Ohio, June 14, 1821, consequently was but a few days
more
than 78 years of age. His father, Eli
Gilbert, emigrated from the ancestral home in Vermont to Ohio in 1818,
where he
resided till the autumn of 1839, when he removed with his family to
Jefferson
county, Illinois and settled in Knob Prairie.
The elder Gilbert was the father of fifteen sons and two
daughters,
twelve of whom came to this county with their parents, arriving here
fifty-eight years ago on the 25th of last October, the others coming
here at a
subsequent date. The subject of this
sketch was married to Mrs. Harriet Taylor, August 15, 1845, from which
three
children were born. Two sons and one
daughter were born, one of which, Philo Menzes Gilbert, died in infancy. Of the remaining children, James E. Gilbert
died in 1889, leaving the daughter, Mrs. Susan C. Wells, who resides in
this
city, as the sole survivor. Deceased
was a prosperous and progressive farmer, first near the old homestead
in Knob
Prairie and afterwards in Wolf Prairie.
He continued to reside upon the farm and direct its affairs till
1880
when he retired from active business and came to Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Universalist Church.
When Mr.
Gilbert came to Illinois, this
part of the state was largely a wilderness, there being but a sparse
population. It was in this county in
1840 that Mr. Gilbert cast his first vote for president of the United
States. Although only 19 years of age,
he voted for Henry Harrison. It was not
unusual for boys to vote in the early days and Mr. Gilbert and his
brother,
Cyrus, two years his junior, were permitted to vote through the laxity
of the
judges of the election.
Of the
fourteen brothers and two sisters
who came to Illinois with Eli Gilbert in 1830, all are dead except Ira,
Cyrus,
Alvin and Raynor Gilbert and Mrs. Lois Isom of Grove Springs, Wright
County,
Missouri.
The
funeral cortege will leave the late
residence of the deceased on West Broadway at 2 o'clock tomorrow
afternoon for
Salem Church, where the obsequies will be conducted by Reb. John Hughes
of
Table Grove, Ill., assisted by Pastor Minor of the local Universalist
congregation. The interment will be at
Salem Cemetery. Friends of the family
invited.

Notes for
Cyrus B.
Gilbert:
The Mt.
Vernon
(Illinois) Register, November 6, 1902
Another
old pioneer has passed to that
undiscovered county. CYRUS GILBERT died
of apoplexy at his home in Waltonville at 3 o'clock this morning.
He was
born in Washington County, Ohio
in 1823, son of Eli Gilbert who settled in the southwest part of this
county in
1839 and brought with him from Ohio the lumber with which to erect his
residence. Cyrus came with his father
and has since resided in this county.
In early
manhood he was married to Eliza
J. McClendon, who has been dead for some years. Of
a number of children born to them, one son and three daughters
survive, Stephen, residing in Oklahoma; Mrs. Henry Forman of
Waltonville, Mrs.
Chas. Brown of near Bluford, and Mrs. Will Maddox of St. Louis. He also leaves two brothers and a sister; M.
R. of this city, Alvin of Waltonville, and Mrs. Lois Isom of Grove
Springs,
Mo. Five or six years ago, he married
Mrs. Ben Hirons, who still survives.
Mr. Gilbert, as are all of his name, was always reckoned among
the
county's best citizens. He was a man in
whom his neighbors had implicit confidence and was frequently honored
by them
in places of trust. He was acting as
Justice of the Peace at the time of his death.
He was for many years an influential member of the Universalist
Church
and politically was an unwavering Republican.
The
funeral will probably occur
Saturday, but the exact time has not been determine.

Obituary
of George
Newell, October 25, 1922
GEORGE
NEWELL - son of
Asa and Elinor Newell, was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, on april
15,
1841 died at home two miles north of Waltonville, October 25, 1922,
aged 81
years, 6 months and 10 days.
He was
born one of a family of seven
children: Levi, Lucy, Oscar, Ichabod,
Phillip and Douglas. All but Phillip
having preceeded him in death, Douglas having died in May, 1922 and
Oscar died
on October 18, 1922, just one week ago.
On December 21, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah
Gilbert,
daughter of Stephen and Sarah Gilbert.
To this union nine children were
born, Asa, Laura (widow of C.S. Lemon): Mina, (wife of D. S.
Fairchild):
Norman, Minnie (wife of A. G. Taylor); John, Earl, Margaret and Lorin,
the
latter two having preceded him in death many years ago.
On June 26, 1888, death claimed his wife and
left him the care of his small children until March 30, 1893, he was
united in
marriage with Miss Henrietta Fred, daughter of Willia and Sarah Fred. To this union, three children were born, one
having died in infancy, Oscar and Miss Myrtle at home.
He leaves besides his wife, one brother and
nine children, twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-granchildren
and a
host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
In early
life he was united with the
Universalist Church at Old Williamsburg and had always lived a devoted
Christian, always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. "Uncle" George as he was
familiarly known, wished he might get well, but realizing his time was
short
expressed his willingness to go.
At the age
of 20, on July 1, 1861, he
volunteered in Co. F., 44th Illinois Infantry and served his country
well and
faithfully for three years, when on Septeber 15, 1864, he was honorably
discharged from service at Atlanta, Ga.
He lay sick for several months in the hospital and fought
afterwards at
Chattanooga, Chicamuga and Atlanta and other severe engagements. Just 57 years to the date of his discharge,
his two youngest sons, Earl and Oscar, left for the training camp
during the
World War. He was ever a devoted husband
and father.
All his
long and useful life was spent
in Jefferson County, one half mile from his old home where he was born. His earthly home was an idea one where peace
and happiness reigned.
Funeral
was held at the home of 1 o'clock,
Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27,
1922, by Rev. G. A. Phelp of Chester, Illinois and the body was laid to
rest in
the Gilbert cemetery under many beautiful flowers.
Maude Newell Place and Claude Newell were twins who remained
very
close all their lives. Maude Newell married Frank Place, and they named
their
oldest son, Claude. Oddly, enough,
Maude's brother and her son she named after her brother died on the
same
day.

Notes for
John David
Dodds:
The Mt.
Vernon
(Illinois) Register, Thursday, December 5, 1935
JOHN DAVID
DODDS,
coroner of Jefferson county and one of its best known residents, died
at his
home, 216 South Twelfth Street, at 11:30 o'clock last night. He had been in impaired health for several
years and his condition had been critical since last Saturday, November
30. His age was 79 years, 1 month and 18
days. Funeral services will be held at
the Universalist church in Waltonville at two o'clock Friday afternoon
with
Elder D. E. Baker officiating.
Interment will be made in Knob Prairie Cemetery.
Born on a farm near Waltonville on October
16, 1836, Mr. Dodds was a son of John and Emeline Keller Dodds, one of
the old
families of Jefferson County. He
engaged in farming for a number of years and later moved to Mt. Vernon
engaging
in the real estate business. On
February 11, 1880, he was united in marriage with Olive L. Gilbert at
the home
of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gilbert of Waltonville. On the occasion of their golden wedding
anniversary, February 11, 1930, the Register News published an account
of Mr. and
Mrs. Dodds' wedded life, showing that the entire period had been spent
in
Jefferson County. During much of the
time they made their home in Mt. Vernon and at other times resided on
their
farm. They lived in Mt. Vernon in 1887
when the town was swept by the great cyclone and their home was among
the many
razed in that disaster.
An unusual
feature of the observance was
that Mrs. Dodds' parents and grandparents lived to celebrate their
golden
wedding anniversaries. Had Mr. Dodds
lived to February 11, 1936, he and Mrs. Dodds would have been married
56
years. Mr. and Mrs. Dodds were an
unusually devoted couple and their long married life was characterized
by
happiness. Always actively affiliated
with the Democratic Party, Mr. Dodds was elected coroner with a large
plurality
in the landslide of 1932. He made an
active campaign despite his age and his personal popularity was
attested by his
success. He conducted the affairs of
his office in a thorough and efficient manner, holding inquests in many
deaths. Troubled by his failing health
at times, he occasionally delegated a part of the work to assistants,
but at
all times he fulfilled the major duties of the position.
Mr. Dodds
was a man of excellent
business judgment, honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow
men, and
in a long and busy life left only friends.
He never entertained feelings of ill will against anyone and his
frank,
open manner, his sterling traits of character won for him the respect
of all,
and the affection of those who knew him best.
He is survived by his wife, five daughters, one son, a sister
and a
brother. The daughters are Mrs. Myrtle
E. Norris of Waltonville, Mrs. Charles J. Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Mrs.
Ruby
Hirons of St. Louis, MO., Mr. H. E. Mannen of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Frank
E. Reed
of Sandoval, Illinois. The son is
Wilburn Dodds of Denver, Colorado. The
brother is W. N. Dodds of Mt. Vernon and the sister is Mrs. Susan
Hirons of
Waltonville. The body will lie in state
at the Myers Chapel, 122 North Tenth Street, until shortly before the
funeral
hour.

Obituary - STEPHEN ASA NEWELL - December 31, 1935,
The Mt. Vernon Register
The hand
of sorrow has again been laid
upon us and that unwelcome guest death came upon us suddenly when it
summoned
Stephen Asa Newell who has passed
serenely into the Kingdom above while helping a neighbor thrash. He was unable to walk away and sat down when
he suddenly collapsed, from whence he never regained consciousness. Asa Newell was the eldest son of George and
Sarah Gilbert Newell, early settlers of Blissville Twp.
He was
born January 15, 1865 on the
farm where he grew to manhood. His boyhood and early life was passed in his
native county where he learned many duties incident to far life and it
may
truly be said of him that whatsoever success he achieved in life, was
due to
his good judgment. He was married to
Huldah
South August 31, 1887 and in this union
were born these children: Mrs. Orvall
Mannen, Mrs. Frankie VanNelson and Harry Newell, all of Waltonville.
Besides
his life companion and the above
named children, the following named sisters and brothers:
Mrs. Chas. Lemons, Mrs. Roy Freeman of Scheller,
Illinois; Mrs. Mina Fairchild of Woodlawn; Mrs. Gifford Taylor, John
Everett
Newell; Earl Newell of Waltonville; Norman Newell of Mt. Vernon; Oscar
Newell
of Waltonville, Illinois and four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild are
left to mourn his sudden demise.
The place
where a person of strong
individuality has made is not easily filled.
We love our friends for what they mean to us in our relationship
to
them. Mr. Newell was a man of many
virtues, absolutely unselfish, freely making any sacrifice that might
benefit
his loved ones. His kindly nature, his
consideration for the welfare of those around him endeared him, in all
who knew
him. It can truly be said of Asa
Newell, that he was a man among men, he thought not of self, but lived
his life
for others, his impress for good will be remembered for his life of
unselfish
devotion to others. His death comes as
a great shock, not only to his own immediate family, but to the many
friends of
middle life who knew and loved him when he was their father, neighbor
and
friend. His life will prove an
inspiration to his children and his friends will ever cherish this
memory.
Only
pleasant memories will stir their
hearts while tears dim their eyes and they dwell in loving remembrance
of years
suddenly ended in death. We bow in a
great sorrow and bring the choicest tribute of affection that our words
can
express. With great faith in God, we
simply said Farewell until we come into the morning of mornings of that
great
Sabbath Day of rest. Mr. Newell was a
member of the IOOF Lodge of Waltonville for twenty-five years. His age was 70 years and 10 days.
The
funeral services were conducted by
Rev. G. A. Phelps of Makanda, Illinois at the Methodist Church in
Waltonville,
Illinois, Thursday, January 2, 1935 at 2 p.m.
Interment was at Knob Prairie Cemetery.
